"This is really odd." Sam commented, frowning at the readout on her handset.

Vala sighed and ground her toe into the dirt. "What?" she asked eventually. She really wasn't interested in the tree that Sam was examining. It didn't appear to be sheltering any treasure under its wide canopy of branches, it was just a tree.

"This tree..." Sam muttered.

Uh-huh, Vala thought to herself. It was a tree. So what?

"Vala, look at this!" Sam sounded excited.

Bloody hell, thought Vala. Bored, bored, she was bored. She liked working with SG-1 when they were fighting bad guys, or even getting themselves sent to alternative universes. She liked working with them when they found, oh, say, valuable artefacts. But sometimes these routine missions could be so boring. She trudged toward Sam, ducking under the overhanging branches of the tree. As she approached she sneezed and her head swum a little. "What?" she asked again.

"This tree..." Sam was still staring at the tree. "It has these bizarre genetic mutations, almost like..." She looked up, her bright gaze meeting Vala's weary one. An arc of intensity shot between them and the dizziness seemed to grow momentarily worse. Vala's mouth went dry and her heart began thudding in her chest. What the hell was going on? Sam's gaze was still locked on hers and Vala found herself swimming in the deep blue of her eyes. Very suddenly, before she had a chance to think, she extended her hands to take hold of the blonde colonel, who reached for her at the exact same moment. They came together so roughly that Vala might have been winded had she been paying attention to such things. Their lips met with ferocity and they were kissing desperately, using every muscle to bring one another closer. Vala felt as though there was a whirlwind inside her cranium. Sam, all she could think of was Sam, she needed her, needed more of her. The colonel's hands were caressing down her neck, along her collarbone. She was mumbling something into Vala's mouth.

It sounded like "The tree..."

Vala didn't care about the tree, her hands were on the small of Sam's back, pressing their lower bodies together. She tore her mouth away from Sam's, she wanted to move downward, biting and sucking the colonel's neck, who was moaning and panting. Vala felt hands yank her shirt from the waistband of her pants and then desperately move up against her stomach reaching her breast and she cried out.

Hang on, her brain seemed to say distantly. I know you've always thought Sam was hot, but what the hell do you think you're doing? Remember those stupid rules Daniel told you about? She was only half listening to herself. "Sam." She sighed.

"The tree..." Sam gasped. Fingers had curled around Vala's nipple and she drew her breath in sharply.

"Producing human pheromones..." Sam managed. Vala's brain was more interested in the way that Sam's ministrations had popped several buttons on her shirt.

"We have to... We have to... " Sam wasn't able to finish, capturing Vala's lips again in a brutal kiss, but suddenly the rational part of Vala's brain was telling her that they had to move - now.

She tried, and they stumbled backward as Sam's left hand began fumbling with her belt buckle. Vala's own hands tugged at it feebly as well, desperate to help the blonde reach her target, but they managed to make steady progress out into the sunshine, away from the tree. Suddenly the roaring in her head stopped and the colonel leapt away from her, hooded eyes staring at her dazedly.

"What the fuck?" Sam managed. Vala had never heard Sam say that word before.  She was heaving air into her lungs, barely able to get her breath back.

"You tell me, Colonel." She managed, staring down at the torn buttons and now open belt buckle. "You said something about the tree."

"Human pheromones." Sam repeated stupidly. "That tree... it was producing human pheromones."

"Are you telling me that that tree just made us..." Vala trailed off, feeling shy suddenly.

"That's what I wanted to show you, that tree produces human pheromones. It made us... do... what we just... did." Sam was either still flushed or blushing furiously. Her eyes were locked on Vala's belt. She searched her side holster and frowned.

"My handset."

"What about it?"

Sam raised here eyes. "I think it must have fallen in there."

"I'm not going back in there to get it." Vala stated quickly. "No way." She felt a laugh begin to bubble in her chest.

Sam looked back toward the tree, still frowning. "Shit."

Another word that Vala hadn't heard her use before. She began to laugh in earnest now and Sam joined her. Suddenly it was very funny. Very, very funny. Vala sat down on the grass, her sides aching.

"Vala?"

"Mm Hmm?" Vala was still chuckling.

"Do you mind if we don't... ah... mention this in our reports?" Sam's grin was tinged with a slight anxiety.

"Mention what?"

Sam and Vala were still sitting on the grass away from the tree when the rest of SG-1 caught up with them an hour later.

"That didn't mean you had to go and touch it." Daniel was complaining loudly.

"I didn't know it was going to..." Cameron Mitchell broke off as he spotted the two women. "Colonel, Vala!" he grinned in greeting. "What did you two find?"

"Nothing." Sam answered quickly. "Just the local flora and fauna, no sign of ancient technology."

"Neither did we." Mitchell shrugged.

"Um Daniel?" Vala asked suddenly.

"Yes?"

"Uh, we just realised that Sam dropped her handset in there under that tree, do you think maybe you and Teal'c could go and get it?"

"Of course." The Jaffa set off for the tree, with Daniel trailing after him.

The End.
