Author's Note: This is a sequel of sorts to 'The Fivel Song'. This only has a mention of the pairing, but I think it is more of a kinship piece for Helena and Dinah. Mentions character death, too.
"Are you crazy?"
"Probably," I replied in a low tone as I continued to pack my cape away into the closet and put summer clothes into my duffle bag. Socks, where are my lucky socks?
"You're just gonna call it quits so that you could go be with some girl?" Not just 'some' girl, I wanted to tell her. You. You can't come home to me? Fine. I'll come home to you.
"Guesso," I said instead. I watched as my sweater folded up with my telekinesis, and almost gave a happy cry when I found my lucky socks. Almost.
"What about wanting to be a superhero? What happened to that?"
"Wade died, and so did Reese and so did Gibson. That is what happened. We give up so much for that life, Helena. For what? People who would torment us and curse us if they ever found out who we really are."
"That's the life, Dinah. You knew that coming into-"
"And I'll remember that going out." To that, Helena didn't seem to know what to say. This surprised me, as she always seemed to have some snappy come back to everything whether we wanted to hear it or not. I stopped packing to look at her expectantly. You know, maybe she needed a moment to find one. I'm waiting...
"I don't think I ever had anyone care about me that much." No snarkiness. Bummer. It would've been a little bit more fun to leave after winning some battle of wits with her. Instead she was going to get all soft and 'Full House' on me with her soft voice and slight sadness. Alright, I can do this.
"Sure you did. You called her 'mom'," I told her. Helena smiled.
"Well..." she said after a long silence, "you're a grown woman. I can't say or do anything more that will make you want to stay now that your heart is set, but getting past Barbara won't be so easy."
"I enjoy a challenge" Helena surprised me by giving me a spine shattering 'kitty hug' as her and her mother called it. This was getting too weird. Helena only gave spine shattering kitty hugs to Barbara because she can't feel the spine shattering effects of it. Plus, Helena's kind of gay for Barbara, anyway.
"You be good. Write, call and all that."
"You know I will," I said automatically.
"Better," she warned. She stared a me for a second and nodded as if she approved. "You done good, Kid. I'll miss you."
Well, thanks. "I'll miss you too. I'm not, you know, leaving for good. I don't think. I mean..." Helena wiped her eyes, a movement that was so quick, I didn't even see the tear. I had to get out of there fast, or at least let her leave first. I knew she didn't want me to know she was crying over me. I was the Kid, the pest, after all. Who knew she actually wanted me in her life? I did, ha, but I pretended not to. I whined and argued with her at all the right moments to make her feel all tough like she wanted. I think that was the reason I got this kind of emotion out of my leaving from her, and to tell the truth, it was scary. I wanted her to punch me on the arm and tell me not to go get knocked up, to which I would give her a dirty glare, knowing that it wouldn't be possible.
"Just..." She couldn't finish her sentence, and she walked out of the room so I couldn't see her cry. That alone was almost enough to make me reconsider everything, but I couldn't. I'm at my happiest when I'm with you, and I'm a long, long way from you. Long distant relationships never seem to last. Not a lot of people willing to put in all that work it'd take to keep one up. I am willing, I just don't think I could stand to be away from you. I finished packing every compartment of my duffle bag and turned around to see a very stern Barbara.
"Where do you think you're going?" And the challenge begins.
