Brooke was in the waiting room in tears. Sam had been hit by Nicole’s car saving her life. It should’ve been me. Brooke thought. It was supposed to be me. Lily, Carmen, Harrison, and even Mary Cherry were with her. Jane and Mike ran into the waiting room.

“Where’s Sam?” Jane asked in tears.

“In the emergency room,” Brooke sniffed.

“Do you know how she’s doing?” Jane asked.

“I haven’t spoken to any of the doctors,” Brooke replied.

“How did this happen?” Mike asked.

“I ran out of the prom and Sam went after me… I ran out into the road and Nicole was driving drunk and she was headed straight for me but I couldn’t move. Sam pushed me out of the way. She saved my life. This is all my fault. I’m so sorry Jane,” Brooke dropped into the chair behind her and cried into her hands. Carmen was sitting in the seat next to her and hugged the blonde.

Jane bent down in front of Brooke and moved her hands from her face. “This is not your fault. I’m not blaming you for this,” Jane said.

A doctor approached them. “Are you Sam McPherson’s family?”

“Yes we are,” Mike answered. “Is Sam going to be okay?”

“To be honest with you I don’t think she’s going to make it,” the doctor said.

“Oh God,” Jane cried. “Can we see her?”

“We’re going to move her into another room and then you can go in and see her,” the doctor answered.

Brooke was the last to see Sam. She sat down in the chair next to the hospital bed. She took the brunette’s hand into hers and squeezed lightly. “Hey Sammy,” Brooke said to the unconscious girl. “The doctors say you won’t make it but I know you will. You were always the strong type.” Brooke placed a kiss on Sam’s hand. “Please wake up. I know we’ve never gotten along but I am glad you’re in my life. You’ve made it enjoyable and worthwhile… and yes even complicating. I’m glad I got a chance to know you.”

Sam stirred a bit and opened her eyes. “Hey,” Sam said weakly. “Why are you crying?”

“They say you’re not going to make it but I know you will,” Brooke said. “You’ll be just fine.”

“Are you alright?” Sam asked. “You didn’t get hurt did you?”

“I’m fine thanks to you,” Brooke answered.

“That’s good,” Sam smiled faintly.

“Why’d you do it Sam?” Brooke asked.

“Do what?” Sam asked. “I’ve done a lot of things.”

“Save my life and risk your own,” Brooke said.

“It was just a reflex,” Sam joked.

“I’m serious Sam,” Brooke said.

“Since I’m dying I might as well tell you the truth,” Sam said.

“You’re not dying,” Brooke said.

“Brooke, let’s face it. There’s no way I’m leaving this hospital alive,” Sam said.

“And you’re okay with that?” Brooke asked.

“Of course not,” Sam replied. “I don’t want to leave my mom and my friends. And I really don’t want to leave you.”

“You don’t?” Brooke asked.

“I pushed you out of the way of the car because I didn’t want to see you get hurt. I didn’t want to lose you. Brooke, we’ve had our bad times but to be honest with you, I love being around you. To sum it all up… I did it for love. I love you.”

“As a friend?” Brooke asked.

“No,” Sam said. “I’m in love with you. I figured that out awhile ago. The only reason I was upset about the thought of Harrison choosing you is that I wouldn’t be with you.”

Brooke moved a strand of hair from Sam’s face. “Would you believe me if I said I felt the same way?”

“You do?” Sam asked.

Brooke nodded and kissed Sam on the forehead. “I’m in love with you Sam.”

“I really wish we would’ve told each other this sooner,” Sam said.

“So do I,” Brooke said. “But once you get out of here we’ll make up for lost times.”

Sam smiled weakly and placed a hand on Brooke’s cheek. “I’m not going to make it.”

“Yes you are!” Brooke cried. “You have to. Sam, please don’t leave me. I’m sorry I ran out during the prom. I’m sorry I put you here.”

“This isn’t your fault,” Sam said. “Don’t blame whatever happens to me on yourself.

Brooke wiped the tears that she saw falling from Sam’s eyes and kissed her on the lips. “Your mom’s a wreck. She said you were sleeping when she was in here.”

“Tell her I love her for me,” Sam said.

“You’ll be able to do that yourself,” Brooke said.

Sam began to cough and her monitor flat lined.

“Sam, no!” Brooke yelled.

The doctors rushed in but Brooke wouldn’t move.

“If you want us to save your sister you’re going to have to leave,” one of the doctors said.

Brooke went back out into the waiting room and waited. It was all she could do.

Two Weeks later…

“Hey Sam,” Brooke said. “I hope you don’t mind but I’ve been sleeping in your room while you’ve been here. It’s just comfortable in there. Oh and, I cleaned it up for you too. Don’t worry I didn’t read your diary. Lily, Carmen, and Harrison told me to tell you hi. Lily and Carmen couldn’t visit because they had to work and Harrison blames himself for the incident so he didn’t want to come with me. I’ll talk to him. Maybe I can get him to visit you. I need to get going but I’ll see you tomorrow. Love ya.” Brooke kissed Sam’s tombstone and left.

“I love you too,” Sam said. “Tell Harrison I said this isn’t his fault. And I’ll be out of this hospital next week so I appreciate you keeping my bed warm. Tell Lily and Carmen to come by tonight. I’ll be awake.”

“Alright,” Brooke said. She gave Sam a little kiss and headed out of the room.
