Chapter Six

Brooke and Sam were sitting in the living room waiting for their parents to come down to talk to them.

“What do you think they’re talking about?” Brooke asked.

“Which one of us to dispose of,” Sam replied.

“Don’t be so pessimistic,” Brooke said. “Things will be fine.”

“How can you be so calm?” Sam asked. “Our secret is out. We’re gonna go through hell before everything is okay again.”

“That’s not true,” Brooke said. “Things will be fine.”

“Are you trying to convince me or yourself?” Sam asked.

“Both,” Brooke sighed.

“What if they want us to break up?” Sam asked.

“We’ll stay together,” Brooke said sternly. “I love you no matter what, remember?”

Sam simply nodded.

“What are we going to do about this?” Mike asked as he paced around his room

“What can we do?” Jane was sitting on the bed watching Mike.

“Lock them in their rooms for as long as possible,” Mike said.

“What about school?” Jane asked.

“They can be home-schooled,” Mike said. “We can never leave them alone again. How did this happen? I thought they hated each other.”

“Apparently not,” Jane said. “Are you ready to go talk to them?”

“I’m never going to be ready,” Mike said. “But let’s go.”

Brooke and Sam could hear their parents walking down the stairs. Their footsteps sounded ten times louder than they really were. When Mike and Jane reached the living room they sat down on the couch opposite of where Brooke and Sam were sitting.

“I don’t even know where to begin,” Mike said. “This isn’t acceptable.”

“I can handle the gay part,” Jane began. “But you two being together isn’t right.”

“It’s not like we’re really sisters,” Brooke said.

“This thing between you two is over,” Mike said.

“No it isn‘t” Sam said. “We love each other.”

“I don’t care,” Mike got up and stormed out of the living room. Jane went after him.

“Mike,” Jane said.

Mike turned around when he heard his wife.

“We need to set some ground rules for them,” Jane said. “I don’t think they’re going to break up.”

“They’re breaking up,” Mike said. “I don’t care what they want.”

“It’s either we make rules or let them be,” Jane said. “And I’d rather make a lot of rules.”

“Fine,” Mike allowed his wife to pull him back towards the living room.

“If you’re going to be together there are going to be some rules,” Jane said. “Listen carefully.”

“No kissing or touching in front of us,” Mike said. “No romantic staring.”

“Romantic staring?” Brooke asked.

“You know, when you stare at someone… romantically,” Mike explained. “And you can’t be alone with each other anymore or sit next to one another during dinner. And we have to know where you are and who you’re with at all times.” Mike left the living room once again.

“Are you going to add to that?” Sam asked.

“No,” Jane shook her head.

“You don’t seem too angry about this,” Brooke said.

“I’m still in shock,” Jane said. “Are you two sure you want to be together?”

“Yes,” Sam answered. “We’re in love.”

“You’re going to have to tell your friends about this. Harrison’s probably already told them but you still need to discuss it with them,” Jane went upstairs with Mike.

“That wasn’t too bad,” Sam said.

“All those damn rules weren’t necessary though,” Brooke complained.

“How do you want to tell our friends?” Sam asked.

“Get them all into one room,” Brooke said.

“So they can kill each other?” Sam asked.

“Okay… how about you tell your friends and I’ll tell mine?” Brooke suggested.

“I don’t want to do it alone,” Sam said. “Can we tell my friends and then go tell your friends?”

“We can do whatever you want to do,” Brooke said.

“Should we tell them we’re leaving?” Sam asked.

“Do you want to go up there?” Brooke asked.

“Hell no,” Sam answered quickly. “I’ll just leave them a note.”

Sam rang Carmen’s doorbell and before she knew it the door flew open.

“That was fast,” Brooke said.

“I saw your car pull in,” Carmen said. “Is it true?”

“Depends,” Sam said. “What’d you hear?”

“That you and Brooke have a thing going on,” Lily opened the door more so that she could see the brunette and the blonde. “Harrison told us. He was pissed beyond belief.”

“Do you guys hate me now too?” Sam asked.

“Of course not,” Carmen said. “Come inside.”

Brooke and Sam walked inside Carmen’s house.

“So, you’re okay with us being together?” Brooke asked.

“After the initial shock we became okay with it,” Lily said. “I’m just sad you felt you couldn’t come to us about this.” Lily said to Sam.

“Yeah Sam, we’re your friends,” Carmen said. “We care about you. Harrison may have a major problem with it but hopefully he‘ll come around.”

“And Brooke,” Lily began. “If you ever hurt Sam we will have a problem.”

Brooke threw her arms around Lily and then Carmen. “Telling you two this has been the best thing that’s happened today. Thanks for being so understanding.”

Sam hugged her friends. “I love you.”

“We love you too,” Lily said.

“We have to go talk to Mary Cherry and Nicole now,” Sam said. “We’ll talk more tomorrow.”

“Do you want back up?” Lily asked. “I can come with you before I head home.”

“I think we can handle this,” Sam said. “Good night.”

“Night,” Carmen and Lily said in unison.

Brooke had called Mary Cherry and told her she needed to talk to her about something important at Nicole’s house. Now the four girls were in Nicole’s living room.

“Well, what’s so important?” Nicole asked. “And why’d you have to bring this pit bull with you?”

“Don’t start with me now,” Sam said. “I’m not in the mood.”

“I’m seeing someone,” Brooke said.

“Who is it?” Nicole asked wide-eyed.

“Is it Sugar Daddy?” Mary Cherry asked. “Or maybe even, Emory?”

“No, it’s-” Brooke got cut off by Nicole.

“Is it a teacher?” Nicole smiled.

“It’s me,” Sam said.

“Are you fucking serious?” Nicole asked.

“Yes,” Brooke said. “We’re dating. Have been for quite some time now.”

“And you neva told us?” Mary Cherry asked.

“We’re supposed to be best friends,” Nicole said.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner,” Brooke said. “I just didn’t think you guys would accept us being in a relationship.”

“Of course we wouldn’t,” Nicole stood up. “It’s Spam. Who would want to date her?”

“Me,” Brooke replied. “Come on guys, don’t be like this.”

“I need time to think about this,” Nicole said.

“So do I,” Mary Cherry said. “I need to process this shockin’ news.”

“We’ll talk on Monday,” Nicole said.

When Brooke and Sam reached the car Sam gave Brooke a hug. “I love you.”

“And I love you,” Brooke said.

“Are you going to tell Josh about us too?” Sam asked as she opened the car door.

“I totally forgot about him,” Brooke got into her car and closed the door.

“Do you want to go over to his place now?” Sam asked getting into the car.

“No, I’ll let Nicole and Mary Cherry tell him,” Brooke said.

“I don’t want to go home yet,” Sam said.

“We better get back before my dad starts calling everywhere looking for us,” Brooke said. “Maybe he has calmed down by now.”

“I hope so,” Sam said. “I don’t want him to decapitate or stab me to death in my sleep.”

“Morbid much?” Brooke said as she drove off.

Chapter Seven

Sam was in the kitchen getting a glass of water when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She jumped and nearly dropped the glass she was holding. She turned around and saw Brooke. “I thought you were your dad.”

“My dad and Jane are both sleeping,” Brooke held out her arms to Sam.

Sam put her water down and stepped into Brooke’s embrace. Brooke kissed Sam on the forehead. “You need your sleep. Tomorrow’s going to be a long day. Come on, I’ll tuck you in.”

“No, it’s alright,” Sam said. “I don’t want your dad to see you in my room.”

“He’s sleeping,” Brooke said. “And I’m not going to be in there long.”

Sam finished her water and went with Brooke to her room.

The next morning Brooke was waiting for Sam to finish her breakfast so she could drive her to school.

“Brooke, you should be heading off to school now,” Mike said as he entered the kitchen.

“Oh, I’m just waiting for Sam,” Brooke said.

“She has a car,” Mike said. “She can drive herself.”

“It’s fine, Brooke,” Sam said. “You can go.”

Brooke left the kitchen and glanced back at Sam. She smiled, blew her kiss, and waved goodbye. Mike’s back was turned to the blonde so he couldn’t see her. Sam fought the urge to smile and quickly finished her breakfast.

“I hope you and Brooke don’t plan on skipping any classes so you can spend time together,” Mike said.

“Why are you being such an ass?” Sam asked. “I love Brooke. I would never hurt her and I don’t want to be responsible for the problems you two have with each other now. I‘m sorry you can‘t accept us, but I‘m not sorry for loving her. You‘re a grown man. Start acting like one.”

Mike ran his hand through his hair. “Is this how you talked to your father when he was alive?”

“My father loved me,” Sam said. “He never gave me a reason to be angry with him. He supported me no matter what my decisions were.”

“He never had to put up with this!” Mike yelled. “And if he had lived long enough he probably would’ve disowned you!”

Tears sprang to Sam’s eyes. She left the kitchen and slammed the front door shut as she exited.

Jane came down and saw her husband in the kitchen. “Was that you and Sam arguing?”

“Yeah, I said some things I shouldn‘t have” Mike sighed. “She thinks I hate her. I don’t hate her. I just… this is too much. I need to go to work.”

Jane sighed and poured herself a cup of coffee. “We could be a reality show.”

Kennedy High…

Brooke closed her locker and saw Nicole standing there.

“Hey B,” Nicole greeted. “I just saw the worse thing imaginable. April Tuna is wearing the same thing as me. How can she even afford the clothes I wear? They have got to be fake. During lunch I’m so messing up her clothes.”

Brooke just stared dumbly at Nicole.

“Why are you just standing there? Say something,” Nicole said.

“You’re not mad at me?” Brooke asked.

“No,” Nicole said. “I just hope you don’t think I’m gonna start being nice to that uncoordinated retard.”

Brooke smiled. “You don’t have to be nice to her if you don’t want to be.”

Mary Cherry walked up to the blondes and put a hand on Brooke’s shoulder. “Brookie, Sam is in the Novak havin’ a breakdown. Lily and Carmen are tryin’ to soothe her but y’all; I think she’s lost it.”

Brooke quickly went to the Novak. When she got there she saw Sam on the ground with Carmen holding her and Lily trying to calm her down by saying soothing things.

“What happened?” Brooke asked taking Carmen’s place.

Carmen stood up with Lily. “She’s upset about something your dad said. We’ll just leave you two alone.”

“What’s wrong, love?” Brooke asked.

“Mike said if my father had lived long enough he would’ve disowned me,” Sam sniffed.

Brooke felt a sudden anger towards her own dad. She couldn’t believe he would sink so low. “You don’t really believe that do you?”

“No… yes,” Sam said. “I don’t know.”

Brooke pulled Sam up and turned her so she was facing the mirror. “You’re father would be proud of you right now. You’re an amazing journalist and a beautiful person. And I’m sure my dad didn’t mean what he said.”

Sam stared at her reflection for a minute and then relaxed. She wiped the tears from her face. “Thanks, I’m better now.”

Brooke wrapped her arms tighter around the brunette. “Do you want to skip a class? We can just hang here and talk.”

“You’re dad said he hoped we weren’t going to skip any classes today to spend time together,” Sam said. “He’s probably got the FBI watching us and everything.”

Brooke picked up Sam’s bag and handed it to her. “I guess we should get out of here.”

It was lunch time now and Sam didn’t know if she should sit next to her friends or not since Harrison was there. She decided to suck it up and go over there. “Hi, Lily, Carmen… Harrison.”

Harrison didn’t move but he didn’t say anything to Sam either.

“Hey Sam, how are you?” Lily asked.

“I’m better now, thanks,” Sam said.

“Do you want to hang out at my place after school?” Carmen asked. “I know it must be pretty tense at home.”

“I have to tell the parentals where and who I’m gonna be with before I can go,” Sam said. “They made a set of rules. We can‘t do anything together. We can‘t even stare at one another.”

“Jeez,” Lily said. “Well, I’ll go home with you so your mom knows you’re with me. Harrison, do you want to join us?”

“I’d rather not be with that backstabbing bitch,” Harrison replied.

“I told you I was sorry!” Sam yelled. “What more do you want from me?”

“Dump Brooke,” Harrison said.

“No,” Sam said. “What the hell is wrong with you? Why can‘t you just be happy for me?”

“You stole my crush!” Harrison said. “Brooke is supposed to be with me! I love her!”

“Whoopty-fuckin-doo,” Sam said. “It’s not like she wants you!”

Harrison got up and stared hard at Sam. “What kind of a friend are you?”

Sam stood up also. “What kind of a friend am I? You’re the one being a prick!”

“Guys, maybe you should calm down a bit,” Carmen said. “I have gummi bears.”

“This friendship is officially over,” Harrison said.

“And this is me NOT CARING!” Sam yelled. “I would think since you went through this with your mom you’d be a little more open-minded.” Sam said in a softer voice.

“This is different,” Harrison’s voice was calmer but stern. “You know I’ve had a thing for Brooke for a long time and you take her from me. Why?”

“I didn’t take her from you. You never had her,“ Sam said. “I want us to stay friends. You know I care about you.”

“If you cared about me you wouldn’t be fucking Brooke,” Harrison said. “She probably doesn’t even love you. She just needs someone to keep her company since she doesn’t have Josh anymore.”

“Shut up, Harrison,” Sam said angrily.

“What? Can’t handle the truth?” Harrison asked. “You mean nothing to Brooke. She‘s just messing with your mind. And you‘re stupid for falling for her.”

Sam couldn’t believe Harrison was saying these things and before she knew what she was doing she slapped him. The whole cafeteria became silent and Harrison looked at her in shock. He glared at her for a second and then left the cafeteria. Sam sat back down and grabbed a handful of gummi bears.

Chapter Eight

The Palace…

Sam was in Brooke’s room talking about what had happened during lunch with Harrison. Lily had to work but she asked Jane if Sam could come with her to Carmen’s around five. Jane said it was okay and Sam was relieved because the scary looks Mike gave her when he saw her freaked her out. She just didn’t want to be home.

“I can’t believe he said that,” Brooke said. “Sam, you know I’m with you because I love you. I’m not using you.”

“I know,” Sam said. “I feel kinda bad for slapping him though.

“Pssh, he deserved it,” Brooke said.

“I saw Nicole and Mary Cherry talking to you,” Sam said. “They’re okay with us?”

“Yeah,” Brooke smiled.

Jane knocked on Brooke’s room door and opened the door without waiting for an answer. “Have you seen Sam?”

“Hi,” Sam said to her mom. “We were just talking, I swear.”

“I believe you,” Jane said. “And I just wanted to let you both know I’m trying to accept this. I really am.”

Sam smiled and gave her mom a hug. “Thanks.”

“And Brooke your dad wants to speak to you and Sam,” Jane said. “He’s in the basement.” Jane left and closed the door back.

“The basement?” Sam said. “He’s gonna kill us.”

“He is not,” Brooke said.

“I don’t want to see him right now,” Sam said. “I might say something I won’t regret, but if you want me to come with you-”

“It’s fine,” Brooke gave Sam a kiss and left the room.

“Jane said you wanted to speak to me,” Brooke said when she entered the basement.

“Do you really want to be with Sam?” Mike asked. “You don’t have to be if you don’t want to be.”

“Why would I be with her if I didn’t want to be?” Brooke asked. “I’m tired of talking about this. And I don’t appreciate you making Sam cry like you did this morning.”

“I’m sorry about that,” Mike said. “I was just angry. Do you want to go live with your mother?”

“Whoa, big shift in conversation. Is that supposed to be a threat? If I don’t break up with Sam you’re sending me away?” Brooke asked.

Sam was at the basement door listening.

“I didn’t mean it like that,” Mike said. “I just thought you’d prefer to live with her.”

“Why would I want to live with someone I haven’t seen since I was a little girl?” Brooke asked. “Do you not want me to live here anymore?”

“No, forget I said anything,” Mike said. “Where’s Sam?”

“She didn’t want to see you,” Brooke answered. “I have homework that needs to be done.” Brooke began to go up the stairs and Sam quickly returned to her room.

Brooke went into Sam’s room through the bathroom. She saw the brunette just sitting on her bed doing nothing. “Hey.”

“Hi,” Sam smiled sadly. “Can we talk?”

“We’re talking right now,” Brooke said as she sat down on Sam’s bed.

“Right,” Sam said. “Well, I don’t know how to say this so I’m just going to say it. I think we should take a break.”

“A break?” Brooke repeated.

“From us,” Sam said.

“What? Why?” Brooke jumped off the bed and looked at Sam.

Sam couldn’t stand the pain she saw in Brooke’s eyes and Sam averted her gaze so she was looking passed Brooke’s head. “I don’t want you and your dad fighting because of me.”

“Me and my dad… we’ll work things out,” Brooke said. “Please don’t leave me.”

“I’m not leaving you,” Sam got up and tried to hug Brooke but she was pushed away.

“Then what do you call it?” Brooke asked.

“Don’t make this harder for me than it already is,” Sam sighed.

“Doesn’t sound like it‘s hard for you at all,” Brooke said.

Sam wiped away the tears from Brooke’s face that managed to fall. “Don’t cry.”

“How can I not?” Brooke asked. “You just dumped me.”

“I didn’t du-” Sam began.

“Whatever,” Brooke said and went to her room.

Sam followed the angry blonde. “It’s only temporary. I’m just trying to make everyone happy.”

“What about us?” Brooke yelled. “We deserve to be happy.”

“And we will be,” Sam said. “Just not at this very moment.”

“I thought we‘d be together no matter what,” Brooke said. “Just leave me alone.”

Sam sighed and left Brooke’s room. On her way downstairs the phone rang. “Hello?”

“Can I speak to Brooke please?” Josh asked.

“Sorry Josh, she’s not in a good mood right now,” Sam said. “I’ll tell her you called.”

“Wait,” Josh said before Sam hung up. “Are you two really together?”

“Yeah,” Sam didn’t want to tell him they’re taking a break because she thought he might try to get Brooke back. “Did you call here to yell at her?”

“No,” Josh said. “I think you two are getting enough of that. I just wanted to see how Brooke was doing.”

“Thanks for being nice,” Sam said. “I wouldn’t have expected you to be.”

“No problem,” Josh said. “Bye.”

Carmen’s room…

“You shouldn’t have dumped her,” Carmen said. “You’re supposed to be strong and stay together through hard times.”

“We’re still together… we’re just… not,” Sam said.

“See Sam, that made no sense,” Carmen said. “You don’t know what the hell you’re doing do you?”

“I know what I’m doing. I’m trying to keep the family together. I don’t want Brooke’s dad to be hostile towards us anymore,” Sam said.

“Like you really care what Mike thinks,” Lily said.

“I don’t want Brooke to lose her father because of me,” Sam said.

“She isn’t going to lose her father,” Carmen said.

“You don’t know that,” Sam said. “And she’s not being reasonable about this. I thought she would understand that I’m only trying to help her. I need to go home and talk to her again. I don’t want her being angry with me.”

“Good luck,” Carmen said. “I hope everything turns out okay.”

Sam got into her car and just sat there for awhile. After clearing her head she put her seat belt on and drove off. Minutes later Sam was waiting for a red light to turn green. When it finally changed she stepped on the gas but a car to her right going extremely fast didn’t stop and crashed right into her. Her car flipped over several times and was now upside down on its hood. The tires were spinning, the car was smoking, and Sam was unconscious.

Chapter Nine

“Where’s Sam? Jane asked. She, Mike, and Brooke were at the dinner table waiting for the arrival of Sam. “She’s not still at Carmen’s. I called and was told she left her house twenty minutes ago. Brooke, have you spoken to her?”

“No, not since she broke up with me,” Brooke replied dully.

“She broke up with you?” Mike asked.

“Well, in her words we’re on a “break” but that basically means we’ve broken up. Looks like you’ve accomplished your goal,” Brooke said.

“This is not my fault,” Mike said. “Don’t blame it on me.”

“Not your fault? It is your fault. She didn’t want to be the reason we were fighting so she ended it. Everything was fine until you found out about us. We were happy. We wanted to wait till after graduation to tell everyone about us because we thought it would make things easier. We’d be in college and if your reaction was bad we wouldn’t have to deal with it because we’d be living in a dorm room. Sam would never admit it but she thinks about our future a lot… or she used to before she dumped me. I had dreams dad and I’m sure Sam did too... thanks for drowning all our dreams,” Brooke said.

“Brooke, don’t use that tone of voice with your father,” Jane said.

The phone rang and Jane went to answer it. “Hello?” Yes… ohmygod, is she alright? …okay.” Jane hung up the phone and begun to cry.

“Honey, what’s the matter?” Mike asked getting up from around the table to check on his wife.

“It’s Sam. She’s in the hospital,” Jane sobbed. “She was in a car accident. A drunk driver hit her.”

Brooke paled at hearing those words. “Is she…” She couldn’t bring herself to finish her sentence.

“No, thank God,” Jane said. “But they won’t give me anymore information until I get down there.”

“You two go on without me,” Brooke said. “I’m going to call everyone to let them know what happened and I’ll be there right away.”

Jane and Mike rushed out the house and Brooke fell to the floor in tears.

Hospital…

After getting herself together Brooke called Lily, Carmen, Josh, Sugar Daddy, and even Mary Cherry and Nicole. Harrison never answered his phone so she left a message. She was now entering the hospital and walking over to the front desk.

“Brooke, over here!” Jane called for her.

“Is she okay?” Brooke asked. She was surprised to see that everyone had gotten here before her. Maybe it was because after she had called them she had another breakdown.

“She’s fine. Nothing’s broken, but she’s pretty beat up. Her air bag didn’t come out when it was suppose to. Luckily she had her seat belt on. She has a concussion though. Along with some bruises and cuts. The guy who pulled her out of the car before it caught on fire left awhile ago. He’s coming back tomorrow just to make sure she’s alright. Everyone has seen her already but she was a little weary then.”

“Can I go in and see her now?” Brooke asked.

“Yeah, she‘s been asking for you,” Mike answered for Jane.

Brooke entered the room Sam was in and saw the brunette sleeping peacefully. She had a big bruise and cut on the left side of her forehead. There were numerous cuts and scratches on the beautiful girls face. Brooke went over to her and touched her face slightly. She ran her fingers over the cuts and placed a kiss on Sam’s lips. She sighed and began to play with Sam’s hair. A tear drop managed to escape Brooke’s eye and fall onto Sam’s cheek. Sam’s eyes fluttered open and she smiled slightly at the blonde.

“Sorry, did I wake you?” Brooke asked.

“No,” Sam answered.

“How are you feeling?” Brooke asked.

“Like I got in a car accident,” Sam retorted

“Stupid question, sorry,” Brooke muttered.

“No, I’m sorry,” Sam said. “I didn’t mean to snap.”

Brooke began to cry again. “This is my fault. If I were more understanding when you broke things off with us this would’ve never happened.”

“Hey, this is not your fault,” Sam said weakly. “You weren’t the one who was driving while drunk. Don‘t blame this on yourself. Bright side, I‘m suing the car company for selling me a car that doesn‘t have an air bag that works properly. I might just try to get them to give me a new car. I‘ll be driving in style in no time.”

“Don’t joke about this. When I heard you were in an accident I nearly died,” Brooke cried.

Sam tried to sit up but it hurt too much.

“Don’t move,” Brooke said when she saw Sam wince in pain. “Do you need anything?”

“No,” Sam said. “Um, have you spoken to Harrison today?”

“I left a message on his answering machine,” Brooke said. “I’m sure he hasn’t heard it yet or he would’ve been here by now.”

“Yeah,” Sam said. “You’re probably right.”

“So…” Brooke wasn’t sure what to talk about.

“I’m bored. When do I get to leave this hell hole?” Sam asked.

“Not tonight that‘s for sure” Brooke answered.

“Did you get to see my knight and shining armor?” Sam asked.

“No,” Brooke shook her head. “But I want to.”

“I’m sorry about earlier,” Sam said. “I want us to get back together. I thought I was doing the right thing but I guess I was wrong.”

“I would hug you right now but I don’t want to hurt you,” Brooke said.

“I’ll settle for a kiss,” Sam grinned.

Brooke bent down and gave Sam a kiss. “Do you want to say bye to the others before they leave?”

“Sure,” Sam said. “Bring ‘em in.”

Brooke left the room and came back seconds later with Lily, Carmen, Nicole, Mary Cherry, Josh, and Sugar Daddy.

“Hey Spam,” Nicole said. “You look like shit.”

“Thanks Satan,” Sam said. “You’re not looking too good yourself.”

“I can’t be mean to you now ‘cause Brookie here will get mad,” Nicole said.

“You know you love me,” Sam said.

Nicole rolled her eyes. “I think your mom, your friends, and Brooke are the only ones capable of that. Seriously though, I hope you get well soon so I can be mean to you hundred percent.”

“I went and got you a gift,” Mary Cherry reached into her purse and pulled out a cup of Jell-O.

“Mary Cherry, you got this from the cafeteria,” Sam stated

“So?” Mary Cherry said. “Be happy I got you somethin.”

“We all hope you start feeling better very soon,” Josh said.

“Yeah, we need someone to write about the things that go on in our school,” Sugar Daddy added.

“I’ll stop by tomorrow with your school work,” Carmen said.

“Oh gee, thanks. I just love homework. Especially after near death experiences,” Sam said sarcastically.

“It’ll make you less bored,” Lily said. “We’ll see you tomorrow.”

Sam said bye to her friends and her enemies. They maybe being nice to her now but they were still enemies.

Chapter Ten

Harrison was standing outside the hospital room. He wasn’t sure if he should go inside or not. He took a deep breath and opened the door. Sam was watching something on TV but the volume wasn’t on. She turned her head the best she could since she had whiplash and looked at Harrison. He was hiding something behind his back and she hoped he didn‘t come here to murder her. She turned her attention back to the TV with that thought still in mind.

“Sorry I didn’t come here sooner,” Harrison said. “I just… I felt responsible for you getting hurt.”

“This isn’t your fault,” Sam sighed. “Why are you and Brooke blaming yourselves for what happened? Neither of you were the ones who crashed into me. Unless you paid that guy to ram into me.”

“Of course not! How could you even think that?” Harrison asked.

“I was joking,” Sam said. “Why are you here anyway? I thought you hated me.”

“I don’t hate you,” Harrison walked closer to the bed. “I was just being a jerk. Forgive me?”

“Possibly… what’s behind your back?” Sam asked.

“A burger and fries,” Harrison showed Sam the bag that contained her food and handed it to her.

“You rock,” Sam took the bag.

“Is Brooke or your mom somewhere in the hospital? I thought they would’ve stayed here with you,” Harrison said.

“I made Brooke leave around twelve A.M,” Sam said. “She’s coming back during lunch and my mom is coming back very soon. She just went home to take a shower. You should get going. School starts in like fourteen minutes.”

“Enjoy your burger. I’ll see you later,” Harrison said.

Brooke saw a man exiting Sam’s hospital room when she was walking to the door. He looked like he was in his early twenties. He had black hair, green eyes, and was muscular.

“Hi, you must be Brooke,” the man said. “I’m Gavin. I was just checking up on Sam.”

“Thanks for saving her,” Brooke said. “I don’t know what I would’ve done if I lost her.”

“It was nothing,” Gavin smiled. “She talked about you a lot while I was in there. She really cares about you. Are you sisters?”

Should I say stepsisters or girlfriend? Uhhh. “Girlfriend,” Brooke said.

“I thought so,” Gavin said. “I just wasn’t sure. Well, it was nice meeting you. I better head off to work before I’m late. Sam seems like a good person. Treat her right. Bye.”

“Bye,” Brooke entered the room and saw Sam trying to get out of bed. “What are you doing?” Brooke went over to the brunette and helped her out of the bed. “You need to rest.”

“No, I need to go to the bathroom,” Sam said

“Where’s your mom?” Brooke asked.

“In the cafeteria,” Sam replied. “Jeez, my back hurts.”

“I heard her talking to the doctor yesterday. You’re going to be able to leave today,” Brooke said. “I’ll give you a back massage when you get home.”

“Yay,” Sam grinned. “Do I get anything else?”

“You get me,” Brooke replied.

Sam smiled and went into the bathroom.

“Do you need help in there?” Brooke asked.

“I’m pretty sure I can manage,” Sam responded.

Seconds later Jane walked into the room. “Brooke, you’re supposed to be at school.”

“I have lunch right now,” Brooke said. “But I guess I’ll get going.”

Sam exited the bathroom. “Bye.”

“Bye,” Brooke said. “I love you.” She kissed Sam on the cheek without thinking.

“Brooke!” Sam said horrified. “The rules.”

“I forgot about that. I’m sorry, Jane,” Brooke said.

“Don’t worry about it,” Jane said.

Brooke nodded and headed off back to school.

“I guess you two are back together,” Jane said.

“As of yesterday,” Sam nodded. “Mike won’t be too happy about it.”

“He’s coming around,” Jane said. “You should talk to him.”

“Eh, I’d rather not,” Sam said.

Brooke was excited. School had just ended for the day and she was dying to get home to see Sam. As she put her things in her locker Josh walked up to her.

“Hey Brooke, how’s Sam doing?” Josh asked.

“She’s doing alright,” Brooke answered.

“We didn’t really talk last night and I wanted to tell you that I have no problem with you dating Sam. If I can’t have you I’m glad Sam does,” Josh said.

Brooke hugged Josh. “That’s sweet of you. Thanks.”

“Well, I need to go to football practice. I’ll call you later,” Josh left and Carmen walked up.

“Hey Brooke,” Carmen said. “How are you?”

“I’m good,” Brooke replied. “And yourself?”

“I’m okay. Are you going to cheerleading practice?” Carmen asked.

“No, Sam got to go home today and I’m dying to see her. You can come over if you want,” Brooke said.

“No, that’s okay,” Carmen said. “I’m sure you want to spend some time alone with her. Tell her I said hi though… and so does Lily.”

“Where is Lily?” Brooke asked.

“Taking a re-test for her math class,” Carmen said. “Oh, and can you give these to Sam. It’s homework from all her classes today.”

“Okay,” Brooke said. “Try to come over later on today. I’m sure Sam would love to see you guys.”

As Brooke walked out of the school Harrison ran up to her. “Can I talk to you?”

“Make it fast,” Brooke said impatiently. She was upset he didn’t visit Sam in the hospital yesterday so she wasn‘t really happy to see him.

“I talked to Sam this morning before school,” Harrison said.

“You did?” Brooke asked. “She didn’t tell me that.”

“I’m sorry. I admit I was a jerk,” Harrison said.

“You’re forgiven,” Brooke said. “I understand you were upset. You could’ve expressed it in a different way though.”

“You’re right,” Harrison said.

“Alright, I’m really trying to get home to see Sam,” Brooke said.

Harrison laughed. “I can see that. Go ahead. I don’t want to keep you.”

Brooke walked quickly to her car. “Things keep getting better and better. Now all I need is for my dad to come to his senses.

“Sam?” Mike knocked on the journalist’s door.

“Come in,” Sam said.

Mike walked into the room and shoved his hands into his pockets. “I know I’ve been a very hard person to get along with as of late. I apologize for my closed-mindedness. If you and Brooke make each other happy than who am I to get in the way? It will take awhile for me to get used to it but I’m learning to accept it.”

“Thanks Mike,” Sam said. “I really do love Brooke. She means the world to me.”

“I know,” Mike smiled and left Sam’s room.

Sam smiled to herself and closed her eyes. That’s how Brooke found her when she entered the girl’s room. “What are you smiling about?”

“I talked to your dad,” Sam said.

“I talked to him before I came up here too,” Brooke said. “He’s coming around.”

“Yep,” Sam said. “Things are looking up for us.”

“They sure are,” Brooke agreed.

“Now, you told me you would give me a massage. I‘d like one right now… please,” Sam turned around onto her back slowly trying to ignore the pain she was feeling

“Sure,” Brooke went over to Sam’s bed. “If I do something to hurt you tell me.”

“You could never hurt me,” Sam said softly.

“Are you sure about that?” Brooke asked.

“Uh huh,” Sam said.

Brooke kissed Sam on the back of her neck and began to massage her lower back.

-the end-
