I must have hit a sore point with that last comment because she’s still sitting there in the car and I’m almost to the front door of our illustrious high school. Maybe I was more on target than I’d intended. Brooke finally gets out of the car and I watch as she stretches and casually looks around. I wonder who she’s looking for and then I see her about half a block away. You can’t miss her really the hair is the first clue, she’s got her head buried in a huge book and it’s a virtual guarantee that she’ll either trip or run into someone. Sure enough one, two…three there she goes. April trips on a crack on the sidewalk and almost eats dirt. May hot on her heels actually is eating dirt, yep there’s the ever present Tupperware container. I swear those two are weird. Especially May. Brooke spots April and starts to head over in her direction when she’s intercepted by Nicole. Brooke dutifully follows Satan over to a group of football players and starts talking, flirting and generally being "Popular" but I notice that she keeps looking over her shoulder for April and her gaze tracks the other girl’s progress all the way into the school.

There are other times during the day when I catch Brooke discretely looking around. By the time we have chemistry together later in the day Brooke’s kinda jumpy and I can’t help myself. "Got ya thinking there didn’t I?"

"Yes" she hisses.

"So"

"So I left her a note in her locker…" Brooke’s voice drifts off her attention caught by something or rather someone just outside the door in the hallway. I catch a fleeting glimpse of red and before I can ask Brooke is up and out the door.

When she slides back into her seat ten minutes later she’s flushed and sort of out of breath. Off to the side I can see that Satan’s interest has been peaked, I wonder if Brooke noticed. Probably not so I guess I’ll do the sisterly thing and give her a heads up. I murmur "I think Satan’s picked up on the scent of scandal in the wind."

"What." Brooke whispers out of the side of her mouth. The last thing we need is for Claw to hear us so I opt to write a note. I am after all a scribe for the modern day. Nicole noticed. How’s that for concise. I slip the note to Brooke. Her eyebrow shoots up and she nods her head solemnly. She slips the note back to me.

Thx

I pass her the note once again. YW

I’m dying to ask what happened but now is not the time. I suppose if its still raining when school gets out I can bum a ride off of Brooke and I can ask her then. The bell rings signaling the end of class and Brooke jets out. The speed she manages to attain could qualify her for the title of Speed Racer but I’d have major speed on too if Satan were headed my way.

"Spam!" Great the Wicked Bitch of the West.

"Satan"

"What’s up with Brookie?"

"Don’t know you’ll have to ask her. Isn’t your coven due to meet in an hour for the ritual daily sacrifice, ask her then."

Nicole smirks and slithers off after Brooke. I don’t see either one of them again until lunch when I see the most amazing thing of all. Brooke carrying her tray across the cafeteria stops to talk to April, seated with May and the other chess geeks, before going to take her seat at the Popular table.

Talk about shaking up the status quo.

From where I’m sitting it looks like Nicole’s head is going to explode. A couple of other people have noticed too, you can sort of hear a wave of murmurs roll through the room.

"Did anybody else see that?" Harrison asks.

"I feel like I just witnessed an episode of the Twilight Zone." Carmen stares after Brooke a look of confusion as to what she just witnessed on her face.

"Sam?" Lily’s question snaps the other two out of their daze and now all three of them are looking at me for an explanation.

"The revolution is upon us." Sure I’m being purposefully obtuse but what the hell, I promised Brooke I wouldn’t say anything to anyone directly that doesn’t mean I can’t drop heavy handed hints.
