#I tell by the way you dress that you're so refined, and by the way you talk that you're just my kind. Girl, why should it be, that you don't notice me? Can I dance with you?#
Faith stands watching Buffy out on the dance floor of the Bronze. Poetry in motion, there is no other word for it, thinks Faith, before slamming back yet another drink. Great dancer, great everything. All I've ever wanted - and more. But I can't tell her that. I can't tell her anything. Big brave Faith, afraid of nothing - except my own feelings - and her reaction to them. She doesn't see me in that way. And at times, I don't think she sees me at all. My fault really. This couldn't-care-less front fools everyone. Sometimes it even fools me, but not for long. I do care. About her I care deeply. I want to dance with her. Just to be close to her would be enough. I can do that, can't I?
#So, before this dance has reached the end, to you across the floor my love I'll send. I just hope and prey, that I'll find the way to say: Can I dance with you?#
Faith moves out slowly across the floor towards Buffy. Hoping that by the time she gets there, she will have found the right words with which to ask her to dance, without frightening her away.
#Baby, baby, is there no chance, I can take you for the last dance? All night long, yeah, I've been waitin', now there's no hesitatin'.#
Wonder of wonders, she said yes! No embarassment, no awkwardness, just a gentle smile of acceptance. I'm so close to her now. We're dancing in synchronised rhythm. And the way she looks at me, the way she smiles, the way she's holding me. It's like I'm floating on air, I'm so happy. Her lips are so near to mine, so full, so inviting, so... Oh - my - God - what have I done?!
Buffy looks at Faith with a questioning expression. "What was that for?" she asks. "Why did you kiss me?" There is no anger or disgust in her voice, only curiosity.
Faith takes her courage in both hands and decides to tell the truth. "I kissed you cos I wanted to, cos I love you, and cos I didn't have the words to tell you."
"Oh," is Buffy's non-comittal reply.
Faith's heart sinks. Oh, is not the answer she was hoping for. Faith's downcast expression prompts Buffy to take the initiative, and she kisses her with a decided passion and expertise with lips and tongue that leaves Faith gasping.
"What was that for?" Faith asks in some confusion.
"To say I love you back." Buffy grins. "Okay?"
"Oh," says Faith, then smiling, as the information registers in her scrambled brain, says, "Okay!" and the dance goes on.
#I want to spend my life with a girl like you, and do all the things you want me to. Till that time has come, when we might live as one, can I dance with you?#
