Janet didn't want to admit Sam's heart had stopped. There was no pulse. There was no life. She panicked. She focused on Sam's closed eyes rather than her training. Sam's chest refused to rise and fall. Sam didn't even sleep this peacefully.

Janet blinked and composed herself, bringing one fist up over her head and slamming it against Sam's chest. It was enough to startle the heart into coming back to life. She exhaled, leading Sam's gurney into the infirmary.

She'd only lost control for a moment. But in that moment, she'd seen the end of everything she held dear.
