It's been so long I'd forgotten this part. I hardly had to do it with my expertise being in exotic diseases, but it did come up once or twice at the SGC. It never got any easier to tell a woman she would never have children. It was simply brutal to have to tell my best friend.

Sam... for the past five years she's been with Joe, I've watched her plan for the child she knew she would eventually have. They picked out names - Thomas for a boy, Sara for a girl - and just kept trying.

I remember the miscarriage in 2008. Oh, how Sam cried... I thought she would never recover.

I stand and circle my desk, crouching next to Sam's chair. I gently take her hand and look down at her shaking fingers. "Sam, I don't know what to say."

She lets herself break down then, tears streaming down her face. I lean forward and embrace her tightly, as if squeezing will repair whatever damage was done to her. "I'll help you find out why this happened," I promise her again, close to tears myself. "I swear to you."

I just hold her. It seems to be enough for now.
