Summary: A friendship can only last so long...

And... just like that... Janet and I aren't friends anymore.

I should be shocked by that fact, rocked to the core, but I'm not. Our friendship is over and I'll have to deal with that. Will she look different in the hallways? Will her smile be different? I don't know. This is new territory for me.

Janet and I were friends almost from the moment she set foot in the mountain. She reminded me of someone I knew in school, I reminded her of her best friend growing up. It helped that we were practically the only two high-ranking women on the base. Our bond was already set in stone when Cassandra came along and cemented us together.

It had gotten to the point where I didn't even knock to enter their home. It was unspoken that I was always welcome. Janet kept my favorite drink stocked in her fridge and I had an unofficial chair in the living room. It was perfect.

But now... now, the friendship is over. Can I deal with that? Can I adjust?

I look at her laying on her side next to me, her body rising and falling with her breath like waves on the ocean. Her back is bare, marked by twin tan lines running down from her shoulders. I brush her hair with my fingertips and lean down, kissing the shell of her ear. She whispers into her pillow and I smile, curling against her back.

Our friendship is over. We can't be just friends anymore, not after this. I'm scared. Worried about the changes that will be forced upon us now that we've taken this next step. But we can face it together... as more than friends.
